Jorge Luis Borges (August 24, 1899, Buenos Aires, Argentina – June 14, 1986, Geneva, Switzerland) was an Argentine novelist, poet, and essayist. Borges is known primarily for his laconic prose fantasies, which often disguise reflections on fundamental philosophical issues or take the form of adventure or detective stories. In the 1920s, he became one of the founders of the avant-garde in Spanish-language Latin American poetry.
