The hero of this novel by Herkus Kunčius (born 1965), one of the most popular writers of contemporary Lithuania, is a Lithuanian intellectual of bohemian origin languishing in Paris. His observations, reflections, and commentary on the French capital and its inhabitants form the book's core. The author's description of Paris initially evokes amazement, which turns into a smile, and then gives way to uncontrollable laughter. Kunčius's novel is a veritable fireworks display of irony, sarcasm, and the grotesque. You read it without stopping, enjoying the author's language and style, who, by skillfully revealing the comic side of many familiar phenomena, values, and attitudes, helps us to part with both our shortcomings and our past. Or at least with that part of that past that is worth parting with.
