Alexander Isaevich Solzhenitsyn is a Russian writer, publicist, public figure, Nobel Prize laureate in literature ("For the moral strength with which he continued the traditions of great Russian literature," 1970), laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation for outstanding achievements in the field of humanitarian activity (2006), and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
This edition includes the celebrated novella "Cancer Ward," about patients at an oncology clinic in a Central Asian city (Tashkent), including exiles, as well as short stories from various years whose importance for understanding and comprehending the harsh fate of 20th-century Russia is difficult to overstate. A special place is occupied by "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich," A.I. Solzhenitsyn's first published work, which became a true sensation ("a subtle, highly artistic work" and "a long-awaited truth," according to V. Shalamov) and brought the author worldwide fame.
