An old house on a quiet Moscow side street, six flights up and a door on the left—and we're in an old Moscow apartment. We'll spend 100 years there, meet several generations of the family, witness the meetings and partings, the grief and happiness, the losses and hopes experienced by many Russian families. The story of the ordinary inhabitants of this old Moscow apartment reflects the history of our country in the 20th century. It's told not only by the characters themselves, but also by their belongings: furniture and clothing, dishes and books, games and household items. After all, objects bear the imprint of time, preserving the memory and traces of the era in which they were created and served. They are witnesses to a history that isn't written about in textbooks, but which is so important to each of us—the history of our families, our friends, our own history.

She wrote a book and collected numerous documents, archival photographs, and artifacts from the era of Alexander Litvin. Artist Anna Desnitskaya accurately and aptly depicted various eras in the life of our country.

REVIEWS FROM READERS AND CRITICS

The result is a book that can be used to study 20th-century Russia, and also to linger in a heart-pounding rapture: my grandmother had a blanket just like that. And they tied bows on me like that when I was sent off to first grade.

Ekaterina Margolis, Colta.ru :

An encyclopedia of Russian life, depicted in meticulous detail, of one family's life in a single apartment over the course of a century, each page representing an era, a generation of residents, their conversations, utensils, and clothing. Word and image are inseparable. Unlike its Western prototypes (primarily illustrated children's books from publishers like Usborne or Dorling Kindersley), this is not only an encyclopedia but also a novel of sorts, a family saga, a family portrait set in an interior. The impeccable verbal and visual stylistic precision of this book places it among the realms of great literature, despite its difficult genre definition.

Anna Narinskaya, Kommersant:

But we don’t have an Apartment Museum... And this is simply a great pity and a great stupidity – because it is the apartment, which accommodates generation after generation and changes with them, that is truly a magic lantern of our history and even our civilization.

This book is like a magic lantern. The comparison is especially appropriate here, because a magic lantern is usually a children's game. "The Story of an Old Apartment" is intended for children, but it's better suited for children and parents, because there's a lot to be said and explained. Simply put, it's a wonderful pretext for a conversation with a child about topics that need to be discussed, but it's unclear where to begin or what tone to strike. But here, both the beginning and the tone are perfectly appropriate—without forced tragedy or unnecessary baby talk.

Daria Vardenburg, " Afisha. Air" :

"The authors of this book are driven by the most precious thing—love and compassion for humanity. And the reader, even if they are too young to recognize their own past in the characters, is inspired by this love and compassion. And if a view of recent history is possible today that can unite, reconcile, and restore the sense of a country as a shared home with its past and future, then this view is precisely that—sympathetic to humanity and attentive to personal history."
