Alexey Tolstoy. The Road to Calvary

A. N. Tolstoy's work is truly multifaceted: he is a master of the historical novel, science fiction, and numerous novellas, short stories, and plays. The theme of Russia, its history, and its destiny proved pivotal in his work. "The Road to Calvary" (1921–1941) is a trilogy about the fates of the Russian intelligentsia on the eve and aftermath of the October Revolution (novels "Sisters," "The Eighteenth Year," and "Gloomy Morning"). The heroes of this epic witness the most important events of the 20th century. According to the author, "The Road to Calvary" is "the author's conscience's journey through suffering, hope, rapture, decline, despondency, and upsurge—a sense of an entire vast era, beginning on the eve of the First World War and ending on the first day of the Second World War."
