In 1966, the novel "Babi Yar"—a horrifyingly detailed history of Kyiv during the Nazi occupation—was first published in three issues of the magazine "Yunost." Later, the writer Anatoly Kuznetsov would leave the country, and his name would be erased from the history of Soviet literature for many years. Also erased would be Savva Brodsky's illustrations, whose powerful black-and-white graphics accompanied the text in both "Yunost" and the 1967 book—the only Soviet editions of the novel. In the 1990s, the original version of "Babi Yar," created by Anatoly Kuznetsov in exile, returned to Russian readers, but Savva Brodsky's drawings, which the artist considered his best works on war themes, remained in obscurity. This edition brings back Savva Brodsky's illustrations - in the format the artist intended and with the text he worked with.
