One of the stories' protagonists is the writer's ten-year-old daughter, whose school essay, "How My Life Changed with the Coming of War," formulates the book's central theme. The narrator describes how the war changed everything: himself, his daughter, who suddenly matured from a child into a teenager, his habits, his feelings, and the way people treated each other, which became more caring and protective.
