Jack Kerouac gave a voice to an entire generation in literature. In his short life, he wrote nearly twenty books of prose and poetry, becoming the most famous and controversial author of his time. Some denounced him as a subversive of conventions, others considered him a classic of modern culture, but all the Beat Generation learned to write from his books. His style, close to automatic writing, partly borrowed from Marcel Proust and creatively modified, influenced many authors around the world: writing not what you know, but what you see, believing fervently that the world will reveal its nature, was something they learned from Kerouac.
"Desolation Angels" occupies a special place in his oeuvre. While continuing the plot of his most famous works, "On the Road" and "The Dharma Bums," this novel also reflects the transition from a spirit of anarchic rebellion to disillusionment with old ideals and the search for new ones; the desire for the Road gives way to a desire for stability, and constant travels with his Beat friends culminate in a return to home. The novel thus became a kind of boundary between Kerouac's early and late periods.
