Elfriede Jelinek (born 1946) is an Austrian writer, poet and playwright whose work has caused much controversy in Austria.

"Before Closed Doors" is a novel based on true events, telling the story of a group of teenagers who, seeking to escape the shadows of their elders, attack passersby under cover of darkness, but their access to what they desire remains blocked. E Jelinek's pen unravels an inexorable thread from the teenager's everyday boredom to the axe in his hands.

A winner of many prestigious awards, Elfriede Jelinek was named World Playwright of the Year in 2003, and in 2004 she was awarded the Nobel Prize, becoming the first Austrian writer to receive this prestigious award.
