Françoise Sagan was called the Mademoiselle Chanel of literature. From her very first novel, Bonjour Tristesse (1954), which caused quite a stir, her literary career blossomed brilliantly, as she produced book after book with astonishing ease, translating them into various languages and selling millions of copies around the world.
The hero of the novel "The Leash" is a young pianist named Vincent. He's talented, but lacks the spark of genius or the thirst for international fame. Poverty, the fate of young talent, is not a threat to him. He is cared for, given clothes, and pocket money. He is married to the charming Laurence, the daughter of a wealthy "daddy," who decides everything for him, right down to which piano he plays. In his weakness and cowardice, he resigns himself to this. But one day, a melody emerges from his fingers, and he creates a film score that brings him fame and a couple of million dollars. So perhaps he will break free from the leash? But will Laurence be willing to part with her favorite toy?
Françoise Sagan is true to herself: her prose – transparent, elegant, devoid of pose – brings joy to new generations of readers.
