Françoise Sagan was called the Mademoiselle Chanel of literature. Beginning with her very first novel, Bonjour Tristesse! (1954), which caused quite a stir, her literary career blossomed brilliantly, producing book after book with astonishing ease, each translated into numerous languages and selling millions of copies around the world. Over the course of her long and eventful life, Sagan wrote more than twenty novels, three collections of short stories, nine plays, two biographies, and several collections of memoirs. However, Bonjour Tristesse! remains her most famous work, so powerful was its impact and such a profound influence it had on French society. Sagan's novels included in this collection are set in Paris and the provinces, as in "The Vague Smile," "Do You Love Brahms?", and "After a Month, After a Year," on the Mediterranean coast ("Bonjour Tristesse!"), and overseas ("Magic Clouds"). Her characters fall in love, lie, amuse themselves, and suffer, spending years pursuing happiness—and Sagan, like no one else, understood that it is an elusive and remarkably unstable substance.
