This complete edition of the novels is reproduced for the first time from the original book publications of "The Twelve Chairs" in 1928 and "The Golden Calf" in 1933. During the Soviet era, the novels were repeatedly reprinted, subject to revisions, changes, and significant abridgements.
The cycle of short stories "Extraordinary Stories from the Life of the City of Kolokolamsk" was published in several issues of the magazine "Chudak" in 1928-1929 by authors under the pseudonym "F. Tolstoyevsky".
The appendix contains a chapter, "The Past of a Civil Registry Office Registrar," not included in the main text of the novel "The Twelve Chairs," first published in the magazine "30 Days" in 1929 as an independent story.
The magnificent illustrations for this edition were created by Olga Grablyovskaya, the winner of the Lermontov 2014 professional artists' competition.
