Isaac Babel was a remarkable Russian writer of the first half of the 20th century, a penetrating, subtle, and ironic storyteller, the author of the immortal "Konarmiya" (Red Cavalry) and the literary father of the celebrated Benn Creek from the "Odessa Stories" cycle. Babel served in the Russian Civil War with Budyonny's First Cavalry Army. The terrifying and turbulent events of those years are reflected in the pages of Babel's prose: in the exotic, strange, and terrifying world he created, there is room for love and death, grief and joy, disdain for danger and the ability to enjoy life, in which the high and the low are closely intertwined. The illustrations for this book were specially created by the renowned St. Petersburg artist Anton Lomaev.
