Clifford Donald Simak is one of the "godchildren" of the renowned John Campbell, editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, where many stars of the "golden age of science fiction" emerged. Early in his literary career, Simak wrote hard science fiction and adventure stories, as well as Westerns, but he later expanded the boundaries of the SF genre and created his own style, which critics called soft, humanistic, and even pastoral, comparing Simak's prose to that of Ray Bradbury. His novella series, The City (the title story is included in this collection), brought him worldwide fame. Over fifty-five years, Simak wrote approximately thirty novels and over one hundred and twenty short stories. He was awarded the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and other awards. He was also named a Nebula Grandmaster.
This book is the first volume of the Master's complete works in the short genre. Some of the works included in the collection are translated for the first time, while others are published in new translations.
