Bobo is a white elephant given to the Russian Tsar by the Turkish Sultan. Bobo dreams of being a war elephant and serving his new sovereign. The elephant wanders through modern Russia, with its war and resistance, wealth and poverty, contented grunts and the anticipation of a nuclear strike. Bobo speaks to warblers and designers, poets and embezzlers, clergy and pigs. Bobo makes history, but only in moments of complete detachment. Six months after the novel was written, Prigozhin's Wagnerian rebellion will traverse part of this path, but, unlike Bobo, it never reaches its destination. To the question "Who is Bobo?" Lenor Goralik replies in a Flaubertian manner: "Bobo is me."
