There are exactly 108 streets in the center of Vilnius. And if you walk along them long enough—that is, almost every day for several years—you can witness amazing stories on some streets. And on others, you can even take part in them.
In cases like this, I know, people usually say, "Such stories could have happened anywhere, of course." But we won't claim that—why deceive people? No, these stories could only have happened here in Vilnius. And only by walking the streets of the Old Town here could one first hear them and then write them down.
This is already the third volume of "Tales of Old Vilnius." And there is still much more to come.
21 stories, none of them previously published. Each story is dedicated to a single street in Vilnius.
There are about 50 illustrations, photographs of the city taken by the writer.
A kind of lyrical guide to Vilnius, like "Biography of Istanbul", only about Vilnius.
From an interview for the release of the 3rd book
In the latest books, the fantastical "world of Echo" gave way to the equally fantastical, yet still very real, Vilnius. Is this because you moved there? Or, on the contrary, did you move because you decided to choose a European city as the "setting" for your future books?
Well, the latest books are varied. Some are about Vilnius and other European cities, and some are still about Echo. Not one instead of the other, but all at once.
As for the move, Vilnius simply came to me at the right moment. I feel like the city chose me, not I it. And that feeling only grows stronger with time. The decision to write "Tales of Old Vilnius" was also clearly the city's, and it's hard not to listen. For some reason, it needed to become a mythical city. And myth is exactly Max Frey's specialty. He's the perfect myth-making tool.
