Richardas Gavelis. Vilnius poker
Richardas Gavelis. Vilnius poker
Vilnius Poker by Ričardas Gavelis (1950–2002) is a striking example of Lithuanian postmodernism. The novel was published in 1989 and has since been reprinted and translated into other languages many times. It became the basis for a performance and an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Vilnius.
The book is published in Russian for the first time. The translation is approved by the author.
Wanderings of four voices through narrow streets, through heavy memories, in the twilight and in suspicions, in search of truth and freedom. A crippled madness dances in the gloomy Vilnius of the Brezhnev years.
Publisher's annotation
"Vilnius Poker" is a sharp and unique book about the capital of Lithuania in the late Soviet era, a ruthless deconstruction of the Vilnius myth, written in a satirical and at the same time tragic tone. The play on postmodernist techniques in the novel by Ričardas Gavelis turns into a surreal phantasmagoria.
