We, for the most part, are spectators at an eternal festival/competition of life and death, spectators not so much openly watching as peeping. Little changes over time. Today's person in front of a television or computer screen is easily recognizable as a prisoner in Plato's cave, constructing his or her notions of the larger external world, to which their back is turned, from the shadows gliding across the cave wall—these images remain fragmentary and vague, and their interpretations fantastical. However, no one sitting in the cave doubts that this is the real world (for Plato, the truth). The gap between facts, representations, and interpretations remains unnoticed.
