"Secret Notes" is being published in Russia for the general public for the first time. Its protagonist, Alexander Pushkin, is presented in an unusual light—through a variety of intimate relationships, complex reflections on life, the nature of sin, love, and creativity, and the complexities of the Russian poet's life, leading to his tragic end. "Secret Notes" has provoked and continues to provoke a flurry of controversial reviews; many Pushkin scholars consider it a clever hoax. But all this only fuels interest.

The book is deservedly considered one of the most scandalous examples of Russian erotica.
