Vasily Pavlovich Aksyonov is a recognized classic and iconic figure in Russian literature. His works are well known not only in Russia but also abroad. Aksyonov achieved success in the 1960s. Responding to the most complex and pressing themes with brilliant prose, he remained the voice of his generation for decades. Among Aksyonov's beloved works is the Moscow Saga trilogy, written in the early 1990s and adapted for the screen in 2004. The trilogy consists of the novels Generation of Winter, War and Prison, and Prison and Peace. They span arguably the most horrific period in Russian history of the 20th century—from the early 1920s to the early 1950s. The Gradov family, three generations of Russian intellectuals, went through all the circles of hell of the Stalin era – the fight against Trotskyism, collectivization, the camps, the war against fascism, the post-war repressions.
