Zhenya Berezhnaya. (Not) about the war

On February 24, 2022, Ukrainian Zhenya Berezhnaya woke up to a call from her family in Kharkiv: war had begun. Her familiar life in her beloved Kyiv, where Zhenya wrote fairy tales for adults, taught, and hosted a literature podcast, was over. Sirens and sleeping in basements, evacuation, refugee status, the loss of a loved one, and attempts to rebuild herself in a new country—all of this is described in Berezhnaya's autobiographical novel, "(Not) About War." This book is truly not about war—it's about the experience of overcoming trauma, about how, through creativity and the support of caring people, freedom, love, and hope can emerge from a terrible reality.
